PRESS RELEASE
New strength for the family, new hope in the struggle against HIV/AIDS.
On 24-25 April there was a pan-African meeting in Johannesburg (South Africa) which was organised jointly by the host association, FERMASA (Fertility Mastery Association of South Africa) and the Africa Family Life Federation (AFLF). The theme was New strength for the family, new hope in the struggle against HIV/AIDS.
The Conference centered around Family Life Education (for young and old) and Responsible Parenthood in the HIV/AIDS Crisis. Whether the speakers were scientific researchers, educators or field workers, they all shared the same conviction, that the key to winning the struggle against HIV/AIDS was to strengthen the family and family values. For this it is necessary to restore families' confidence in themselves, that they are able to protect and develop their members and to give them real choices about the education of their children and family planning.
The struggle against HIV/AIDS calls for coordinated action by all sectors of society. Strengthened families will bring special help to this struggle - hope that HIV/AIDS can be overcome.
The Africa Family Life Federation, which was formed only in 2001, has member organisations working in many countries of sub-Saharan Africa and the Indian Ocean. It continued its first Congress until 30 April, with reports on the work of its members, training and the exchange of experiences. There were 26 countries represented at its General Assembly on 28 April.
The Headquarters of the Federation is in Mauritius, where its President, Mrs. Danielle Sauvage also lives.
FERMASA represents the Federation in South Africa.
The Federation's members are all engaged in family life education and in supporting families, especially by natural family planning services. These help couples to manage their fertility naturally by observing the signs of fertility and infertility which a woman can recognize in the course of her fertility cycle. This approach which involves dialogue between the husband and wife helps couples to discover the meaning of their sexuality and improves their relationship.
The member associations also offer young persons an education for life and love in the perspective of their integral personal development. By this education boys and girls learn respect for each other and for their sexuality, leading them to abstinence before marriage and fidelity after it. By promoting the dignity of the human person in this way the associations make a most necessary contribution to the struggle against HIV/AIDS.
