The MDV (Movimento de Defesa da Vida) exists as a non-profit organisation since the early '80s. It is non-confessonal and non-political and is dedicated to the training of teachers in Sexual Education and Family Planning, Marriage Counselling, Family Counselling, Teaching Sexual Education in schools and to groups of teenagers, young people or parents who request it, and the teaching of Family Planning including the following of couples who choose natural methods.
We have also recently initiated a programme based on the American model "Homebuilders", through which we train professionals to intervene in families who are at risk of having their children withdrawn from them. This intervention is limited to six weeks during which time the family is followed on a 24hr/7day a week basis and encouraged to solve its problems, so that the children may remain with their parents.
During about six years the MDV barely survived as the government in power during that time gave us no support. Since 2003 we have signed a protocol with the Ministry of Education and The Ministry of Work and Social Services which has permitted us to enlarge our staff and put plans into action. We now have seven people working on the various programmes on a parttime basis and six administrative, financial and secretarial staff apart from Graça Mira Delgado who is our executive director. Various others, trained by us, give talks in schools, etc., when necessary.
The NFP method we teach is based on the method taught by CLER (France).
We have started to put together a group of young people who use NFP and are interested in deepening their knowledge and perhaps train as teachers. We are setting up a training programme. |
